British accent, American accent or Filipino accent

Published by blogsmith at 6:21 pm under Bangkok Edit This

I had never been aware of different accents until I came to Thailand. I thought speaking English fluently and be able to carry a conversation was good enough. Little did I know that accent is an important part of a language.

As weeks passed by and no prospect of a job I was getting discouraged. One day one of my homies told me that we must try to have a good accent either British or American when we speak English. Asians do have various accents that is influenced by their language and the same is true with other nationals from Europe like Russians, Italians, Hungarians, French etc, etc. But I thought it was nonsense. What was more important to me was the grammar and diction. But later on I saw the light.

As I became more acquainted with the English language and started to think in English becoming immersed in the language I came to understand the integral role of accents in a language in order to deliver the message more clearly and understandable.

I guess it all comes down to how the person connects to you via dialect. I know that some people can be racist when it comes to dialict. I hope that is not the case that you are coming up against.

Thank you Cmaher for your comment. I don’t have anything against accents and dialects. I was just overwhelmed that in Thailand having an American and or British accent is overly emphasized and how it is used as one of the top qualifications for a job.
